Indigo Bunting
If the Indigo Bunting had a motto, it would be "chase the sunshine." Unlike many secretive woodland birds, this cheerful finch relative loves to be seen and heard. During the peak of summer, when the midday heat silences most other birds, the male Indigo Bunting will proudly perch on the highest, most exposed branch or telephone wire, singing his heart out. His song is a bright, enthusiastic, and rhythmic melody, traditionally sung in distinct couplets: "sweet-sweet, chew-chew, sweet-sweet!", a joyful soundtrack to lazy, warm summer afternoons.
